This is a copy of my comments found in the American Submariner Magazines 2nd Quarter Officers Section. But, unlike the magazine, you may post questions and/or comments.
“As the majority of our membership is aware of, we have been going through the painful process of replacing our antiquated National Website. The longer than normal time taken to bring the new site online is rather difficult to explain to anyone not versed in the language of computer programming (which includes me), but I will give it a shot from a layman’s viewpoint.
The present USSVI website is the typical product of technical “organic” growth. It evolved from an original site designed to support a single FBM submarine crew and their activities. Through several redesign efforts, it evolved into what we have today.
The underlying database structure mainly supports two major features of the present USSVI site, “Decklog” and “USSVI” membership. The initial intention of the original developer (Tim VeArd) has been compromised due to numerous cobbled additions to the original programming code, Microsoft’s decision to drop support of the antiquated programming language originally used and the passing of Tim VeArd in 2013 whose somewhat proprietary programing language went with him.
At this time, we are left with an antiquated infrastructure that has become extremely cumbersome, rapidly becoming not cost-effective, difficult to maintain and loaded on a hardware server that is reaching its “end of life”.
With this in mind, a decision was made by the USSVI Board of Directors to pursue the development of a new website and updated data infrastructure. The complexity in deciphering the programing language that was originally used and to maintain as much data as possible has resulted in what is now our third attempt (the first two were highly professional website developers that could not decipher the language used for the database) to “right the ship” and we have chosen to go “in house” so to speak with our efforts both for cost concerns and a better understanding of what the organization needs. We have a couple of very dedicated SubVets who are working on this new system on a pro bono basis. It is still in the early design phase and based on past experience we will not be setting any predefined target dates for completion, it will be done when it is done.
Please be patient, fortunately, for now, our present website handles our bare data necessities.”

I will now open the floor for a discussion period until 1600 Central Time today for questions or comments.
